Enhancing Sonoma’s Natural Beauty: Monica & Jay’s Wedding at MacArthur Place
There is a distinct magic to designing for intimate weddings. When a couple focuses less on a massive guest count and more on the intentional experience of their closest loved ones, it allows every single design detail to shine.
That was exactly the vibe for Monica and Jay’s stunning celebration at MacArthur Place Hotel & Spa in Sonoma. Their energy throughout the day was absolutely magnetic. They were incredibly relaxed, deeply in love, and their main priority was clear: celebrate beautifully, embrace a sophisticated style, and have an amazing time with their immediate family and closest friends.
As a wedding florist, working with a couple who completely trusts your vision is the ultimate gift. Monica and Jay gave me total creative freedom. They provided a general direction, but ultimately let me step into my expertise to guide them on how to seamlessly transform the venue.
Enhancing, Not Competing With, Sonoma’s Natural Beauty
If you’ve ever visited MacArthur Place, you know it’s already lush with stunning, natural Northern California greenery. When designing florals for this property, my philosophy is always to enhance the environment, never to compete with it. You want the floral installations to look as though they belong there—as if they grew naturally just for this day.
To achieve this, we curated a sophisticated, warm color palette featuring:
Rich creams to bring in classic elegance.
Soft peaches and subtle mauves to add depth and warmth without overpowering the venue’s natural tones.
On the main lawn—which served as the backdrop for both their beautiful, laid-back ceremony and their open-air reception—we focused on lush, organic arrangements that framed the couple perfectly while letting the inherent charm of the Sonoma grounds do what they do best.
A Multi-Space Guest Experience
One of my absolute favorite things about a MacArthur Place wedding is how beautifully the venue flows. It forces you to think about the guest journey as they move through different pockets of the property.
Monica and Jay utilized three distinct spaces, allowing us to think creatively about how to design for each unique environment:
1 The Lawn: The heart of the day, hosting a relaxed and emotionally charged ceremony followed by an elegant dinner under the Sonoma sky.
2 The Cocktail Space: A separate, cozy area where guests could mingle, sip local wines, and enjoy the beautiful weather.
3 The Coach House (The After-Party): This is where the party really came alive! Monica and Jay wanted a high-energy, fun after-party vibe, and the historic Coach House lounge was the perfect setting.
A Champagne Tower Finish
To transition from the relaxed, soulful dinner to the high-energy after-party, the celebration moved into the Coach House, complete with a spectacular champagne tower! It was the perfect exclamation point on a day that was equal parts sophisticated, intimate, and wildly fun.
Monica and Jay proved that an intimate guest count doesn't mean you skimp on the details—in fact, it means you get to make those details even more personal and memorable.
