Why Communicating with Your Florist is Key to a Cohesive Wedding or Event Design

When planning your wedding or special event, flowers are just one piece of the overall aesthetic. As florists, we take inspiration not just from your color palette but also from your linens, dinnerware, chairs, candles, and even the venue itself. This is why it’s essential to share every design detail with your florist—because the more we know, the better we can ensure a seamless and beautifully cohesive tablescape.

How Linens and Table Design Impact Floral Choices

One of the best examples of why these details matter happened at a recent spring baby shower at MacArthur Place. During our initial consultation, the client envisioned an all-white color palette, including white table linens. Keeping this in mind, we chose creamy ceramic vessels for the floral arrangements, adding a subtle warmth to balance the white tones.

However, when we arrived on-site, we noticed the beautiful rustic wood tables at the venue. Rather than covering them with white linens, we suggested leaving the tables bare to highlight their warm wood tones. This small change made a huge impact—it allowed the buttery yellows in the florals and the soft blue details in the menu cards to shine, creating a harmonious and natural color palette.

By considering every design element, from the floral vessels to the surrounding decor, we were able to enhance the event’s aesthetic rather than compete with it.

Why Sharing Design Details with Your Florist Matters

If you have a wedding planner or designer, they will typically provide us with a design deck that includes your chosen linens, flatware, dinnerware, and candle colors. However, if you’re planning your event without a designer, we highly encourage you to share these details with us directly.

Here’s why this matters:

• Floral colors interact with their surroundings – White florals on a white linen may appear washed out, whereas pairing them with warm wood or colored linens can add depth and dimension.

• Vessels should complement, not clash – The material and color of floral vases should blend seamlessly with the table setting for a polished look.

• Candles and votives influence ambiance – The color and finish of candles and votives (gold, silver, clear glass, etc.) affect how light interacts with the florals and overall tablescape.

At the end of the day, there’s no such thing as giving your florist too much information. The more we know, the better we can curate a design that feels intentional and cohesive.

Designing a Harmonious Tablescape

The MacArthur Place baby shower was a perfect example of this thoughtful approach. The final design balanced soft whites, warm wood tones, buttery yellows, and subtle blue accents, creating an elegant yet inviting tablescape.

If you’re planning your wedding or special event, be sure to share all your design details with your florist—even the ones you think may not matter. From linens to tableware, candles to chairs, every element plays a role in achieving a cohesive and stunning event design.
