Why Flower Prices Are Rising (And How We Can Respond with Intention)
This morning, I received a message from Mayesh—one of the largest flower wholesalers in the country and a trusted source I rely on for many of my weddings. Due to new tariffs on imported flowers, pricing is expected to increase starting April 5th. While this news may feel overwhelming for couples planning their wedding, I want to share what’s happening behind the scenes and how we can navigate this moment with flexibility, creativity, and care.
What’s Causing the Rise in Flower Prices?
There are several factors at play when it comes to the rising cost of flowers:
New Tariffs on Imports: Many of the flowers used in weddings are imported from South America, Europe, and Asia. These new tariffs will directly impact those prices.
Fuel & Shipping Costs: Transporting delicate blooms—especially refrigerated ones—has become increasingly expensive.
Climate Events & Labor Shortages: Flower farms worldwide are still recovering from pandemic-era disruptions and extreme weather, which limits supply and increases cost.
But while we can’t control global trade policies or weather patterns, we can choose how we respond—and I believe this is a chance to make more intentional and impactful decisions together.
Why Local Flowers Matter Now More Than Ever
Now is the time to support our local flower farmers. Here in Northern California, we’re incredibly lucky to have access to seasonal blooms grown by passionate, hardworking farmers. By leaning into locally grown flowers, we can:
Reduce Costs: Local flowers skip international shipping and tariffs.
Support Our Community: Every purchase uplifts small farms and keeps our local economy strong.
Lower the Carbon Footprint: Choosing blooms grown nearby reduces transportation emissions, making your wedding more eco-conscious and sustainable.
This is more than a smart budget move—it’s a chance to do good while creating something beautiful.
How We Can Design Beautifully (and Mindfully)
If you’re currently planning your wedding, here’s how we can move forward:
1. Embrace Seasonality & Flexibility
Instead of focusing on specific flower types, I encourage couples to share their color palette and overall vibe. This gives me the freedom to select the freshest, most stunning flowers available—often from local farms—and design something truly unique for your day.
2. Focus on High-Impact Pieces
We don’t need to fill every inch with flowers. Sometimes, one thoughtfully designed installation or a lush, show-stopping bouquet can have more impact than quantity. Together, we can prioritize the moments that matter most.
3. Trust the Process
I’ve been designing weddings long enough to know that with a little flexibility and creativity, we can always craft a design that feels personal, heartfelt, and visually stunning—no matter what’s happening in the global flower market.
My Promise to You
Flowers are more than décor to me—they’re a form of storytelling, of connecting with people, and of sharing beauty with the world. I’m committed to working with intention, supporting our local growers, and guiding my couples through every step of the process.
Let’s design something that’s not only gorgeous, but grounded in purpose and community.
